The Schools Touch Championships Taps off in Oxford

West Schools Touch Championships: A Day to Remember in Oxford!

On March 21st, 2025, the scenic grounds of Oxford RFC came alive with the energy and excitement of the West Schools Touch Championships. This flagship event was a celebration of skill, teamwork, and the growing passion for Touch Rugby among young athletes. With over 200 players from 8 schools participating from year 7 to year 10, the day was nothing short of extraordinary.

A Showcase of Talent and Teamwork

The event featured a thrilling mix of games, with teams showcasing their dedication and hard work. Players demonstrated not just their athleticism but also their ability to work together as cohesive units, embodying the spirit of Touch Rugby. Each team had their eyes set on progressing into the National Finals, adding an extra layer of determination to every play.

The format of the games ensured everyone had a chance to shine. With 6 players on the field and unlimited substitutions, the students were able to rotate and bring fresh energy to every match. It was heartwarming to see the camaraderie between teammates and the respect shared among competitors.

Coaching Masterclass: Learning from the Best

One of the standout features of the day was the Coaching Masterclass, a unique opportunity for the young players to learn from current International players. University leaders stepped up to deliver expert coaching sessions, sharing valuable insights, tips, and techniques. These sessions not only enhanced the players' skills but also inspired them to dream bigger and aim higher in their Touch Rugby journeys.

The involvement of university leaders also highlighted the pathway from school-level Touch Rugby to higher levels of the sport, offering the students a glimpse into what their future in the game could look like.

Building Towards the National Finals

The West Schools Touch Championships was more than just a regional event; it was a stepping stone for these young athletes. The top-performing teams from the day earned their spot in the National Finals, where they will compete against the best schools from across the country. The excitement and anticipation for the next stage of the competition are already building, as these players continue to train and prepare for the challenge ahead.

A Community United by Sport

Beyond the games and coaching sessions, the event was a celebration of community. Parents, teachers, and supporters came together to cheer on the players, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and positivity. The event also reinforced the values of Touch Rugby—inclusivity, teamwork, and respect—making it a memorable day for everyone involved.
